98 Buick Park Ave Check Engine Light is still on after being checked, could a broken tethered gas cap be the ?

I had my 98 Buick checked out by my local dealership and they reset the light after servicing. The light came back on and I am wondering if a broken tethered fuel cap on the fuel door latch could be the problem?|||Did you disconnect the battery? If not, do so for 45-60 seconds, then re-connect. The light should go out.

Good luck.|||what was the code, was it an evap code|||No the tether is there for your convenience only. Go to AutoZone, get the code number and let us know. We may be able to help you from there.

Good luck!|||try disconnecting ur nev. battery cable for 2 minutes,,,,,,

possibly ur computer will reset itself,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,|||Most of the auto parts stores, autozone, schucks, (depends on where you live) will loan you their code reader from the front of the store, if you give them your drivers license to hold while you take the code reader out to your car in the parking lot.

You plug it in, (get low under your drivers dash and you will see the funky plug) and turn your car on and press the button on the code reader and a minute or so later, a little code will show up - to tell you what the check engine light is for. Write this down word for word, and then give the code reader back and get your license back.

Then google the code, or post it on here and people with a book of codes can tell you what the light is for.

Also on the code reader handheld device, usually there's a button for "clear the check engine light" which will turn the light off on your dash, until the car recognizes the problem is happening again. So if you buy a $8 new gas cap and put it on, and that solves it... then once you clear the message, it wont come up again. Unless that wasnt the problem.
